PUERTO RICO

Our apartments are located in one of the best areas of our island

Puerto Rico is a tourist resort located on the coast of the municipality of Mogán, in the southwest of the island of Gran Canaria. It stretches along three parallel valleys or ravines that flow into the Atlantic Ocean; from east to west, Agua de la Perra, Puerto Rico and Amadores. Thus, the buildings are attached to the coastal slopes that reach down to the sea.

This curious location means that Puerto Rico enjoys a unique microclimate, within the already exceptional climatic conditions of Gran Canaria. The area is one of the sunniest on the island and is protected from the trade winds by the island's central peaks.

Puerto Rico is born for and for the enjoyment of the ocean. No matter what time of day it is, everything points towards the water.

What to do in Puerto Rico

Relaxation, beaches and water sports should not be missing from your agenda if you visit Puerto Rico. Any time of the year is a good time to enjoy the tourist activities available in this part of Gran Canaria. The most obvious is the beach, but it is also ideal for water sports, sailing and even dolphin watching. Here are some ideas to make your holidays active and fun in equal measure.

watersports

Fishing, for its part, has one of its best spots in the Canary Islands in Puerto Rico. This is the venue for the Big Game Fishing Championship, which is recognised by the IGFA (International Game Fishing Association). An international event that brings together dozens of boats off the coast of Puerto Rico. Finally, another nautical activity that can be done on the water is to go by ferry from Puerto Rico to Mogán to visit this famous fishing town.

RESTAURANT IN PUERTO RICO

Being a tourist resort does not mean that you will not find good bars and restaurants serving local food in Puerto Rico. One of the best known and most recommended is the Balcón Canario, where you can order delicious Canarian dishes at a good price, such as potatoes with mojo, pork, fish or some of the islands' cheeses. Another classic is Olas Locas, located right on the harbour breakwater. Potatoes, rice dishes, fish and grilled meats are served on this terrace with the air of a beach bar.

If you are looking for restaurants, both Don Quijote and La Taberna de María Salinas are two places of proven quality where you can find good à la carte dishes.

Plans with children

Travelling with children to islands as diverse as Gran Canaria is a blessing because you can always find something fun to do with them. Even if you decide to stay only in the surroundings of Puerto Rico, you will find options. Among the things to do with children you might be interested in are water sports such as kayaking, a simple activity that can be done at any age. It is not necessary for them to paddle if they are small, they can sit between the two paddlers. Cliffs and caves can be reached, so there's a thrill if you're with teenagers.

For those who prefer something quieter, you can go on a boat trip to see cetaceans, with the advantage that at least one dolphin is almost always spotted. If you like animals, about 25 kilometres from Puerto Rico is Palmitos Park, a botanical garden and zoological park where you can admire wild animals, an aviary, dolphin shows and more.

And, of course, the best plan of all: leave them on the beach for hours, including snorkelling goggles and snorkels, and take them for an ice cream along the promenade.

Beaches in Puerto Rico Gran Canaria

The small paradise of Puerto Rico, an urbanisation that seems to have been born for enjoyment, lives turned to the sea, as you have been able to see, so its beaches are its main assets. Be sure to enjoy its two inlets at any time of day, stroll at sunrise and dine at sunset on a terrace overlooking the ocean. Stroll along the beaches at sunset, when most people have gone home and you have them all to yourself, or enjoy a cocktail on the promenade as the sun goes down... Small pleasures await you in this Puerto Rico of Gran Canaria.

Puerto RiCO beach

The main beach of this locality is also called Puerto Rico. It is located in the centre of the urbanisation and is of an artificial nature, as it was built next to the first buildings that were constructed. Its main advantage is its urban character, which offers all the comforts to the visitor. It also has a promenade and several restaurants and terraces on the sand, where you can eat and have a drink.

Its other characteristic is the protection it enjoys from the tides. The breakwaters of the port and the ravine enclose the beach, creating a small bay that softens the waves coming in from the Atlantic.

AMADORES Beach
As the coast continues westwards, the beach of Armadores appears, the other sandy area of the town, which is also of artificial origin. It is separated from Puerto Rico by the mountain that surrounds the town. Armadores beach also has two breakwaters that partially enclose it, turning it into a unique swimming pool open to the sea. It also has numerous restaurants along its promenade and a large car park.

What to see on the way to Puerto Rico:

If you are going to Puerto Rico from Maspalomas, Las Palmas or any other part of Gran Canaria, you should definitely make the most of your trip to visit Puerto de Mogán, known as the Canary Island Venice. It doesn't have canals as such, but it does have charming seaside architecture dotted with small bridges that give it a very special atmosphere.

Also nearby is the town of Arguineguín, one of the few fishing villages that has maintained its essence despite the development of tourism in the area.

In case you haven't visited Maspalomas yet, don't hesitate to make a stop in this marvellous natural spot in the south of Gran Canaria. In just 20 minutes by car you will reach the Maspalomas dunes, one of the island's landmarks. A place that will teleport you to a desert by the sea. Once there, take the opportunity to stroll along the seafront promenade and visit the famous Maspalomas lighthouse.

As you can see, the town of Puerto Rico, in Gran Canaria, can be an ideal option for a day of nautical leisure on the south coast of the Canary Island. If you want to know more, discover other destinations in our guide to Gran Canaria.
